주님의 기도 성당(Pater noster)  ‘하느님을 경배하는 장소’(2사무 15,32)인 올리브 산 정상에는 예수님께서 제자들에게 '주님의 기도문'을 가르치셨고(마태 6,9-13; 루가 11,2-4) 예루살렘의 멸망과 재림과 세상의 종말을 예고하셨던(마태 24,1-3; 마르 13,1-2; 루가 21,5-6) 동굴 위에 세워진 “주님의 기도문 기념 성전”의 흔적들이 남아 있다. 

이 성전을 “빠떼르 노스떼르”(Pater noster) 성전이라고 하는데, 빠떼르 노스떼르는 “우리 아버지”에 해당하는 라틴어 '주님의 기도' 첫 글자이다.   콘스탄티누스 황제의 어머니 성녀 헬레나는 324년에 예루살렘으로 성지를 순례 왔고, 콘스탄티누스 시대의 3대 대성전인 예수님의 무덤 위에 세운 ‘예수님 부활 기념 성전’(십자군 이후 '무덤성당'으로 부르게 됨), 베들레헴의 ‘예수님 탄생 기념 성전’ 그리고 올리브 동산위에 ‘엘레오나’라고 칭하는 대성전을 지었다. 

326-333년에 걸쳐 지어진 이 성전의 이름은 ‘올리브 나무 숲’이라는 의미를 지닌 희랍어 ‘엘라이온’의 와전된 발음으로 길이 65m, 폭 30m나 되는 거대한 성전이었다고 한다.   엘레오나 성전은 614년에 페르시아 군대에 의해 파괴 되었고, 붕괴된 비잔틴 시대 성당 위에 1106년 십자군 시대에 소경당이 건립되었다. 이때부터 순례자들에게 그곳이 예수께서 제자들에게 주의 기도를 가르친 곳이라고 소개되었고, 소경당 안에는 히브리어, 희랍어 그리고 라틴어로 된 주의 기도문이 적힌 대리석 판이 장식되었다. 

하지만 십자군이 패한 뒤 소경당도 파괴되었고 그 자리는 이슬람교도들의 손에 들어갔다1868년에 프랑스의 바씨의 아우렐리아(Aurelia de Bassi) 공주가 그 땅을 사서 프랑스에 헌납하였고,   1875년 조그마한 기념성전과 카르멜 수녀원을 지어 이곳을 관리하고 있다. 아우렐리아 공주는 그 수녀원 안에 있는 묘지에 묻혀 있다. 1910년부터 1911년까지 실시된 발굴 작업 때 이전 교회 건물이 유물이 출토되었다. 

기념 대성전은 아직도 미완성인채로 있다 주님의 기도 기념성전에서 순례자들의 눈길을 끄는 것은 빠떼르의 회랑 (Chiostro del Pater)이라고 부르는 수녀원의 회랑 안에 걸려 있는 각국의 언어로 되어 있는 주님의 기도문 판들이다. 현재(2006년 12월) 145개국의 언어로 쓰여져 있는데 특별히 반가웠던 것은 몇몇 나라이지만 점자어로 된 '주님의 기도문'까지 있어서 흐뭇하게 했다.

Learn to Chant the Pater Noster (Our Father)

First, click on the speaker to the left to hear the chant sung by the priests of the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter (FSSP). Play it a few times so that the sound becomes familiar to you (before the actual Pater Noster, you will hear: "Per omnia saecula saeculorum," "Oremus," "Amen," and a very short prayer).  Next, take the prayer one line at a time. If you're new to Latin, just memorize the words to the very first line along with that line's melody (which will make memorizing the prayer in Latin a lot easier!). When that is mastered, move on to the next line, and so on.
